Robocop-2014-movie

Finally, we’re getting a first look at the new ROBOCOP movie starring The Killing’s Joel Kinnaman as Alex Murphy/RoboCop, and in this reboot, the face shield retracts to show his face which is among one of the many departures from the 1987 film.

After watching the trailer, it’s clear director Jose Padilha is not interesting in merely copying the first film, which is a good sign given the Brazilian director comes from outside the Hollywood system and hopefully won't play by the usual rules.

There are many differences in this version that has fans already complaining, but we suspect they’d complain as well if it was simply a homage to the 1987 film starring Peter Weller. For one, Murphy’s family lives in the new film and RoboCop not only has one, but several cyborgs that come after him when he goes rogue. And the biggest difference being that this cyborg has the ability to show his face with a retractable helmet. In the original, we never see Murphy’s face after he becomes RoboCop. And then there's the black suit and helmet which I'm sort of digging although there is a throwback to the silver-colored suit when Murphy is first transformed into the cyborg.  But at least we have that famous phrase that reminds us of the classic. “Dead or alive. You’re coming with me.”  Let's not forget about the cool gadgets seen in the preview such as Robocop's motorcycle and a stealth-looking flying machine.

The new ROBOCOP trailer also introduces us to other key players such as Gary Oldman, Michael Keaton, and Samuel L. Jackson but its not clear who will be ROBOCOP’s main nemesis. If they play the obvious card it would be Michael Keaton as the head of Omni Consumer Products (OCP).

We’ll have to wait and find out when ROBOCOP opens next year on February 7, 2014.
