Senator John Lewis' 60 plus years of social activism and legislative action in Congress is captured in a new documentary, JOHN LEWIS: GOOD TROUBLE now available on Digital. The film directed by Dawn Porter chronicles his early life as a sharecroppers son, his fateful meeting with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in 1957, his training as a Freedom Rider fighting for equality and on the campaign trail supporting new incumbents. CineMovie talked to one of the producers, Erika Alexander in our first podcast below.
The title JOHN LEWIS: GOOD TROUBLE refers to his activism which got him jailed 45 times in his lifetime. He likes to stir up trouble, but the good kind he says. The documentary captures the 80-year old's fighting spirit which hasn't waned in present day even though he's battling cancer.
In the documentary, Porter interviews Lewis, his family members who recount how he used to preach to chickens as a child, his Congressional colleagues and political leaders along with rare archival footage.
It's a moving piece of film that would inspire even the naysayers of the Black Lives Matter movement. I talked to producer Erika Alexander about her reasons for making this relevant documentary. You might recognize the producer and actress who's starred in "Living Single" and most recently in CW's "Black Lightning."
