SEPTEMBER 5 actors Peter Sarsgaard, Ben Chaplin and John Magaro tell CineMovie that the multi-camera production felt like a theater setting in a guerillo-style shoot with continuous takes around the cramped sets. The actors also reveal shooting in the actual city of Munich and the nearby Olympic Village set the mood for the production. SEPTEMBER 5 is playing in select cities now and expanding into more theaters on January 17, 2025.
SEPTEMBER 5 follows the AMC Sports news team who broadcast live the hostage situation at the 1972 Munich Olympic games when the Israeli athletes were held captive at the Olympic Village. Peter Sarsgaard, Ben Chaplin and John Magaro play the news executives faced with the decision to broadcast the unfolding tragic events live to millions of people around the world.
At the heart of the story is Geoff (John Magaro), a young and ambitious producer striving to prove himself to his boss, the legendary TV executive Roone Arledge (Peter Sarsgaard). Together with German interpreter Marianne (Leonie Benesch) and his mentor Marvin Bader (Ben Chaplin), the story focuses on the intricate details of the high-tech broadcast capabilities of the time, juxtaposed against the many lives at stake and the moral decisions that needed to be made against an impossible ticking clock.
