INTERVIEW: Special Effects Challenges Behind OZ: THE GREAT AND POWERFUL Movie

Scott Stokdyk, an Academy Award®-winner and three-time Oscar® nominee, is a senior visual effects supervisor at Sony Pictures Imageworks.  He spearheaded the visual effects for the Sam Raimi film, now available on DVD and Blu-ray, starring James Franco, Rachel Weisz and Mila Kunis.  Disney invited CineMovie for a day at Sony Pictures Imageworks.  While at the special effects house, Stokyk's team presented the how-to of creating China Girl and the bubble voyage sequence in the film. The presentation introduced several forms of the behind the scenes movie magic employed to bring China Girl to life, from the initial artwork and character design, to the on-set puppeteering during filmmaking, and finally, through each stage of the visual-effects process.

After the visual presentation, CineMovie's Fernando Esquivel sat down with the senior visual effects supervisor for a more in-depth discussion about the process and to give us insight into the challenges presented by the creation of an non-existent environment as imagined by Sam Raimi.

Take a listen to what he had to say in our video interview.
