The first look at the BLACK PANTHER sequel was introduced in big fashion at Saturday's Hall H Marvel panel. Chadwick Boseman's death is addressed in the new preview with Wakanda morning the loss of T'Challa in BLACK PANTHER: WAKANDA FOREVER. The new trailer also revealed the new villain, Namor the Sub-Mariner played by Narcos: Mexico actor Tenoch Huerta but the Atlantian is re-imagined as a Mesoamerican figure - enter the Mayan and Aztec influence.
The BLACK PANTHER: WAKANDA FOREVER trailer stirs up sad reminders that Chadwick Boseman is no longer in this world, and the Black Panther mantle will pass on to someone else - perhaps Shuri.
Since the show must go on, the Marvel Studios film introduces a new antagonist threatening Wakanda. No doubt the death of T'Challa spurs the rise of this new threat. In the Marvel comics, Namor is a mutant-hybrid, the son of a human father and an Atlantean princess much like Aquaman. To avoid comparisons with the DCEU superhero, it seems Ryan Coogler and co-writer Joe Robersons Cole went a different direction with this Marvel anti-hero, and gave him roots in the Mayan and Aztec cultures. While the Aztec Empire ruled Central America, the Mayans lived closer to a body of water, the Caribbean Sea which is part of the Atlantic so it's not a stretch to bring in these influences. Judging from the Atlantean wardrobe, there's also Aztec influence with the turquoise in the costumes. Mayans reserved turquoise for offerings so they did not embed them in their costumes like Aztecs.
It's exciting to see the director not only bring black excellence to BLACK PANTHER: WAKANDA FOREVER but to introduce Latino heritage into the mix making the next outing even more intriguing.
BLACK PANTHER: WAKANDA FOREVER is in theaters on November 11, 2022.
