Luc Besson returns to space with his new film, VALERIAN AND THE CITY OF A THOUSAND PLANETS starring Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne. Besson and Delevingne launched the latest trailer Monday night to a select number of press in Hollywood followed by a reception. Watch the new trailer.
The visually spectacular new adventure film from Luc Besson, (THE PROFESSIONAL, THE FIFTH ELEMENT, LUCY) is based on the ground-breaking comic book series which inspired a generation of artists, writers and filmmakers, and hits theaters July 21, 2017!
As with his work in THE FIFTH ELEMENT, Besson’s use of vibrant colors, visuals and characters are similar in VALERIAN AND THE THOUSAND PLANETS, and hopefully the movie will be on par with the latter. The scope of the film is overwhelming as seen from the trailer preview Monday night on a big screen in 3D.
During our sit down with Besson and Delevingne, Besson says making VALERIAN AND THE CITY OF A THOUSAND PLANETS was less of a nightmare than THE FIFTH ELEMENT almost 20 years ago. THE FIFTH ELEMENT was ground-breaking for its time, but it wasn't without trouble. The French filmmaker says it would take up to 6 hours to set up one shot with a clunky camera. Now he can hand hold a camera and stand behind the actors to get his shot.In the 28th century, Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne) are a team of special operatives charged with maintaining order throughout the human territories. Under assignment from the Minister of Defense, the two embark on a mission to the astonishing city of Alpha-an ever-expanding metropolis where species from all over the universe have converged over centuries to share knowledge, intelligence and cultures with each other. There is a mystery at the center of Alpha, a dark force which threatens the peaceful existence of the City of a Thousand Planets, and Valerian and Laureline must race to identify the marauding menace and safeguard not just Alpha, but the future of the universe.
