'Prey' Director Dan Trachtenberg and Producer Jhane Myers Reveal Key Details about New Predator Trailer

PREY is the latest installment in the PREDATOR franchise directed by Dan Trachtenberg (The Boys, 10 CLOVERFIELD LANE). CineMovie chatted with the director and producer Jhane Myers about the new trailer and what we can expect from this prequel iteration.
The Hulu Original will stream on August 5, 2022, exclusively on Disney’s direct-to-consumer platforms in the United States. Set 300 years ago on the Comanche Nation land in the Great Plains, a young, fierce warrior, Naru fights off an invader from another world - Europeans, but then there’s also an alien predator threatening their existence on their land.
The setup for PREY will be familiar to PREDATOR fans as the original films briefly touched upon the legend that these alien invaders have been visiting Earth since the beginning. Trachtenberg confirmed the idea originated from the earlier movies for the screenplay written by Patrick Aison (Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan).

In the new preview, a full Predator shot is not visible but this creature doesn’t seem as buff and seems different from previous iterations. The director hinted that perhaps there are other species of Predators so these creatures will be a new creature design we haven’t seen before.
While we recognize the three red bullseye markings of the Predator in the teaser, there’s another alien technology in the trailer not seen before in the cinematic versions. Trachtenberg revealed we will be seeing new weapons. While these are ancient Predators, the species is still more highly evolved than humans at this point.
Producer Jhane Myers expressed her excitement in participating in PREY and the recognition it brings to the legacies of the Native communities, led by a female Comanche warrior. An acclaimed filmmaker, Sundance Fellow and member of the Comanche nation herself, she focused on bringing authenticity to the representation. While we see a limited amount of the Native language in the first full trailer, she revealed the film is respectful to the language. The director added it was a tricky feat to balance both languages, but he was proud of the outcome.
They also hired a cast comprised almost entirely of Native and First Nation’s talent, including Amber Midthunder (“The Ice Road,” “Roswell, New Mexico”) as the lead, newcomer Dakota Beavers, Stormee Kipp (“Sooyii”), Michelle Thrush (“The Journey Home”), Julian Black Antelope (“Tribal”).
PREY hits Hulu on August 6 in the US, Star+ Original in Latin America, and a Star Original on Disney+ in all other territories.
OFFICIAL SYNOPSIS
Set in the Comanche Nation 300 years ago, “Prey” is the story of a young woman, Naru, a fierce and highly skilled warrior. She has been raised in the shadow of some of the most legendary hunters who roam the Great Plains, so when danger threatens her camp, she sets out to protect her people. The prey she stalks, and ultimately confronts, turns out to be a highly evolved alien predator with a technically advanced arsenal, resulting in a vicious and terrifying showdown between the two adversaries.
