Nathan Fillion Is Surprised At How Dark Netflix’s 'A Series of Unfortunate Events' Is & The Scene That Made Him Cry

The tragic tale of three orphans continues in season 2 of Netflix's A Series of Unfortunate Events (now available for streaming), and the show has only gotten darker, according to one of the stars Nathan Fillion. Of course there are emotional moments too, and one of them hit home for Fillion who admits he broke out into tears.
In season 2, Violet, Klaus and Sunny Baudelaire continue investigating their parent's death while staying ahead of their evil guardian Count Olaf (Neil Patrick Harris) who continues to plot against them this time in disguises in order to get their inheritance. However, the siblings continue to suffer never ending unfortunate events. Nathan Fillion, who joins season 2 plays Lemony Snicket's kinder brother, is amazed how dark the series can get.
“Kids are watching this? This is dark. It’s so dark. Everybody is dying all the time," said Fillion at WonderCon. "There’s a ray of hope. It gets extinguished in a terrible way. And then they say, season 2 guys, we’re really going to get really dark. Really? This is for kids. Don’t forget, it’s for kids. But honestly, I kind of love that as far as… first of all I know it’s a show that caters to kids but they don’t pander to kids. It’s eloquent. They use big words."
The lesson children can take away from the series is that life isn't always fair. “It’s kind of an introduction that life sucks,” Fillion explained.
At least Fillion's character Jacques Snicket is a positive, heroic figure who may save the day and do the right thing.
In the second episode of A Series of Unfortunate Events Season 2, a scene called for Fillion's Jaques and his "buddy" Harris as Olaf to whistle together. The moment "tugged at his heart strings" says the actor because it reminded him of his brother.
“Me and my brother, we’re like besties. That scene made me cry thinking of him.”
Hopefully the tears didn't melt off his glued mustache. Fillion admits growing facial hair is one of his weaknesses so the production glued the 'stache onto his lip but it complicated things. Working with his friend Neil Patrick Harris is always a good time, but he couldn't partake in the laughs in-between scenes because it would stretch the glue. Instead he would chuckle with his lips tightened up which ended up sounding like the laugh of maniacal villain.
