Vanity Fair dedicated a whole issue on Marvel's MCU featuring all the key superheroes including an interview with Feige regarding the future of the franchise and which actors may not be returning to the Marvel universe after AVENGERS 4 set for release in 2019. The original Avengers played by Chris Evans (Captain America), Mark Ruffalo (Hulk), Robert Downey, Jr. (Iron Man), Scarlet Johansson (Black Widow), Chris Hemsworth (Thor) and Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye) may not be returning after AVENGERS 4 since their contracts with Marvel expire.
Unlike other movie studios or franchises, Marvel will not be milking the hell out of the same MCU characters, but will had off the baton to the new kids on the block which include Ant-Man, Spider-Man, Black Panther, Guardians of the Galaxy, Doctor Strange, Captain Marvel and new franchises from Marvel's vast comic book library. He promised INFINITY WAR will “bring things you’ve never seen in superhero films: a finale.” That could only mean the death of a few characters which should be expected given the large cast. Some may retire or sit out the next alien invasion in the future, but there are two distinct phases.
“There will be two distinct periods," Feige told Vanity Fair. "Everything before Avengers 4 and everything after. I know it will not be in ways people are expecting."
Usually in superhero films, you don't kill off the heroes but in this case, there are tons of others that will take their place. I, for one, applaud that strategy since you can only do so much with one character (e.g. Batman).
In the Vanity Fair article, Johansson also hinted she will no longer be part of the MCU after AVENGERS 4.
“I feel a lot of joy for the next generation,” Johansson said. “It’s a bittersweet feeling, but a positive one.”
It will definitely be bittersweet for the millions of fans who love these characters. So besides your movie tickets, bring tissues to clean up all those tears we may be shedding on May 4, 2018 and May 3, 2019 when INFINITY WAR Part 2 closes a chapter in the MCU and starts a new one.
