Iman Vellani brings an energetic vibe to a lackluster story in THE MARVELS. However, Vellani along with Brie Larson and Teyonah Parris make a great and entertaining team in a space adventure.
Carol Denvers (Larson), S.A.B.E.R. astronaut Captain Monica Rambeau, and Jersey City super-fan Kamala Khan’s (Vellani) become intertwined when a Kree villain opens up a wormhole. Together the Marvels must stop Dar-Benn (Zawe Ashton) from destroying other worlds.
The villain isn’t particularly intriguing partly due to a lack of development of the character. Midway through the movie, her motivation for her actions is revealed, but it’s not compelling enough.
Despite that, the space adventure with the superhero trio is the most entertaining. What the film has working for it is the change of setting. Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury commands a space station and the action takes place on other planets or on space ships. The change in locations helps keep the pace going.
The switching of powers between the Marvels is another fun aspect of the movie. The effects are seamless as are the edits.
Vellani is the standout with her cheery nature and fangirling over Captain Marvel. The actress’ energy brings a refreshing aspect to the film. She has great chemistry with Larson and Parris. Her family also joins in the adventure and provides some comic relief and not much else.
Goose, the cat, also brings his A-game with a few extra surprises.
Director Nia DaCosta does her best with what she’s inherited. The story which she cowrote with Megan McDonnell and Elissa Karasik is written as a stand-alone movie. There are many hilarious moments that bring levity to the story. Women and young girls will enjoy the girl power vibe. Most adult men I’ve heard from were not thrilled with the movie but the film is still fun despite the lackluster story.
The way to enjoy THE MARVELS is to come in with no expectations and high hopes that it will advance the MCU. Those familiar with WANDAVISION and MS MARVEL will get more out of it because of the knowledge.
THE MARVELS is now playing in movie theaters.
