NEW ON DVD: TOY STORY 3 Not The Last of Toy Movies

CineMovie sat down with director Lee Unkrich, producer Darla K. Anderson, and the voice of Andy, John Morris to discuss the last of the TOY STORY's movies. When asked if there could ever be another Toy Story, Lee Unkrich feels everything was tied up so nicely that as far as Andy is concerned, they were done. But Darla K. Anderson added that there will be short films to continue the toy’s stories and perhaps one day there might be a full-length film featuring Bonnie, the little girl who inherits Andy’s toys. When John Morris, the voice of Andy was asked how he felt about that he replied, “In a way it is such a beautiful ending to the story. It’s touching, it’s meaningful, and so in that way, I’m happy.”
That may be good news to TOY STORY fans who were sad to see the franchise end. Even the most manly of men admitted to holding back tears during the finale of TOY STORY 3. John Morris joked his mother cried "like Niagara" when she watched the film. Do the filmmakers feel they have done their job well when they hear about fans in tears? When director Lee Unkrich and producer Darla K.Anderson started this film they had one goal in common, “We just didn't want to disappoint anybody.”
Now, the highest ranking G-rated movie of all time, TOY STORY 3 has fans from all over the world. One aspect with international appeal was when Buzz Lightyear started speaking Spanish. The idea for Spanish Buzz came out of a table discussion trying to move the story forward. When Buzz accidently gets reset to demo mode, they felt that he needed one more transition before returning back to normal. By having him being reset to Spanish, which is totally possible with today’s technology, it opened up a lot of comic possibilities. It also allowed Buzz to show his passionate side and reveal his feelings for Jessie. Spanish Buzz was animated by Spanish animator Carlos Baena who supervised his motions frame by frame in order to give him that Spanish flair. Carlos in particular studied Tango, Flamenco and Pasa Doble dancing. He also received an assist from Dancing With The Stars Cheryl Burke who did the choreography for the film.
The Spanish dubbed version of the Spanish Buzz was done in a different dialect. In Spanish versions of TOY STORY 3, Buzz speaks with a Castilian accent and when switched he begins to talk like an Andalusian. This only proves that Buzz has global appeal which makes him popular all over. According to Darla K Anderson, “What’s so cool about this film and all the Toy Story films is how much they connect to everyone around the world, especially kids.” It is nice to know that the toys will live on, even if it’s only in short films.
The home video release will not be the last we hear about TOY STORY 3. Award season is fast approaching and the Pixar movie will surely be a shoe-in for an Academy Award nomination in the Best Animated category. When asked if they're thinking about Oscar season, Lee said that they never thought about that. "We just wanted to make a movie that people would enjoy and was worthy of being alongside the other two."
TOY STORY 3 definitely proved worthy and now the complete box-set containing all 3 Toy Story films will be available in standard DVD as well as a combo pack containing a Blu-ray Disc,a DVD and a Digital Copy. Also contained in the set is the animated short Day & Night directed by Pixar’s Teddy Newton.
By enjoying all three films in the Toy Story series you can witness first hand the brilliance of Pixar and see the growth in animation over the past 15 years. What is done in TOY STORY 3 could hardly be imagined 15 years ago. By experiencing the complete box-set and all the DVD extras it will be like taking a course in computer animation history.
TOY STORY 3 is available on DVD and Blu-ray November 2.
